A Promise to My Grandfather: A Follow Up

Fri Mar 04, 2005 at 04:07:33 PM PDT

[Promoted from the diaries by DavidNYC. My father is a Holocaust survivor - and my grandfather a victim of it - so I imagined this diary might have special meaning for me as I read it. But I could never have imagined the stunning conclusion. I insist that you read to the very end of this miraculous story.]

After writing my diary "A Promise to My Grandfather" yesterday, I received over 40 emails from all over the country (I am still getting some right now) from those that were also impacted by the Holocaust. I read each one of them and shed a tear for every word. Many thanked me for sharing the story of my grandfather, but I should thank all of them for their stories. It helped me see that I am not alone in my pain, but also to see that there is hope. Hope that there are those that want to fight the hate that is now forming and stop it before we repeat it.

However, there was one email from BettyG in San Rafael, California that moved me that it is taking me way too long to write this diary.

Here is my follow up with BettyG's email.

The Return of "The Bonus Army"

Fri Mar 04, 2005 at 10:15:35 AM PDT

I always tell my history students - "Those that fail to study history are doomed to repeat it"

It looks like the leasons of the "Bones Army" Marches of 1932 are not alive and well in the Bush Administration. Sad. Because if the day returns of another "Bonus Army", the Republicans are in for some very lonely decades.

A Promise To My Grandfather

Thu Mar 03, 2005 at 12:24:40 PM PDT

Last year at my grandfather's funeral, I made a promise to both him and myself that I would fight to the very end to prevent the evil that he had to endure in his life from happening again. Everyday when I look into the blue eyes of my daughter, the same blue eyes my grandfather had, I am reminded of that promise and know that it is not only a promise to him, but to her as well.

Did the Bush Administration Hush Wead?

Wed Feb 23, 2005 at 11:30:26 AM PDT

Apparently learning from the Gannongate fiasco, the Bush Administration was able to hush Doug Wead, the man who taped his pre-presidential conversations with George W. Bush. It appears that they did not need him talking to any TV folks like Gannon so stupidly did.

He cancelled his appearance on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews and sent a note to Hardball producers yesterday explaining why.

Step One: The Medical Draft

Tue Feb 22, 2005 at 07:13:46 PM PDT

The first boot to fall if there is going to be a re-instatement of the military draft will be a medical personnel draft. This draft may be getting closer than many may expect.

There are reports that medical and nursing students are filling out "more" paperwork than normal when filing government paperwork. Of course, after this memo was circulated around medical schools, it could be nervous students that think that they are about to drafted and they are acting a bit paranoid. Can you blame them?

Al Franken Returns to Sundance!!

Mon Feb 21, 2005 at 01:48:44 PM PDT

Sundance made it official. Al Franken's show will be returning to Sundance on June 6. The show will probably air at 9 pm or 10 pm EST. It will be a one-hour condensed version of the day's 3 hour show. Now you will be able to SEE Al and Katherine(the thinking man's sex symbol), along with guests like Krugman, Brock, and Conason.

The beauty of this arrangement is that it will allow those that do not have Air America locally, and where satellite radio or webstreaming is not a option. There is now this option. Again, it may not capture everyone, but it is another place to get the word out.

Here is a link to find out if Sundance is available in your area.

When You Can't Beat Them, Buy Them

Sat Feb 19, 2005 at 06:24:25 PM PDT

One thing that we as Liberals/Progressives/Democrats have never really brought up for discussion when it comes to Media Consolidation is instead of fighting the game, we start to play the game. Why don't we start to buy shares in Media Companies and actually start affecting decisions using the stockholder system?

This is something that Greenpeace has started to do to impact companies like Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon-Mobil. Granted they don't have enough shares to make the companies totally change their ways, they atleast are getting a voice at the table.

Dr. James Dobson's Upcoming Dilemma

Fri Feb 18, 2005 at 07:25:05 PM PDT

I am already starting to see the Headlines starting to form for next week - "Dobson Calls For Boycott of FOX" & "To Night on the No-Spin Zone: James Dobson!"

For those of you that have not been made aware, this weekend, FOX's hit show The Simpsons will tackle Gay Marriage with one of its characters coming out of the closet. This will put Dr. Dobson in a real pickle after his much ado over SpongeBob. Of course, Dr. Dobson claims he never said that SpongeBob was gay, quickly retracting his attack on this cartoon character.

Well, here is another Cartoon character that is OPENLY coming out of the closet and the show will OPENLY perform gay marriage(s). So what will Dobson do?

Are Keith Olbermann's Ratings Improving (Due to Us)?

Wed Feb 16, 2005 at 01:28:55 PM PDT

The Righties love to attack our Media Victories, with the simple saying "They are small potatoes!" This is the same argument that they kept throwing at Air America and others like Big Eddie - "Oh they are going bankrupt", "They only have 20 stations", "No one listens to liberal radio". Well, I proved them wrong with an earlier diary showing that Air America and liberal radio has proven to be a success and is about to break wide open. Now it looks like here soon I will be able to prove them wrong with their similiar attacks on Keith Olbermann.

As many of you know, Righties love to throw back in our face that King Bill O'LIEly gets many more viewers than Keith does. Well SpongeBob gets more viewers than Bill does, and Jon Stewart's Daily "Fake News" Show attracts more of the key 18-34 demographic than FOX's "Supposedly Real" News. But they don't like to hear that.

But is Keith's Ratings starting to grow? A trend is starting to form, that not only may disturb the Righties, but make MSNBC reconsidering moving to the Right.

DailyKos as an Incubator

Tue Feb 15, 2005 at 08:45:00 PM PDT

One thing that I noticed from this past fund-raising weekend is that Bloggers can raise a lot of money and fast. That made me start to wonder if DailyKos could start a Democratic/Political Group Incubator.

For those that don't understand what I am talking about, here it is in a nutshell - Incubators help organizations or businesses survive and grow during the start-up period, when they are most vulnerable to failure.

Why not have the DailyKos help start up and support some of these organizations that we know that we need to combat the Righties?

"Mr. Pot and Mr. Kettle, I believe you know Mr. Black"

Tue Feb 15, 2005 at 05:10:21 PM PDT

In typical Conservative hypocrisy, Robert Herbold, former COO of Microsoft and a current member of the President's Council of Advisor on Science and Technology, blasted teacher unions and anti-voucher advocates for the poor performance of US students when it comes to Math and Science.

In a speech given to an audience at the libertarian Hillsdale College, Mr. Herbold blamed the teaching community for failing to qualify enough teachers to teach math and science and not implementing a strong science and math curricula. However, he failed to mention the unrentless attacks by Christian fundamentalist on science and math that has prevented teachers from even teaching these subjects. Also, he failed to mention the administration that he works for failings.

Elections Don't Always Equal Freedom

Sun Feb 13, 2005 at 10:44:53 AM PDT

Many Bushbots and Righties say that societies that have elections are free societies. Well Saudi Arabia just had an "election", but now this-

Saudi Arabia's morality police are on the scent of illicit red roses as part of a clampdown on would-be St Valentine's lovers in the strict Muslim kingdom.

How could anyone have a problem with people expressing their feelings, especially of how they feel for other human beings? Oh wait?

An Alabama lawmaker wants to who sought to ban gay marriages now wants to ban novels with gay characters from public libraries, including university libraries.

Is Air America Hurting?

Fri Feb 11, 2005 at 08:41:47 PM PDT

It seems that the Righties are attacking Air America (again). They have questioned (again) if the Liberal Radio Station is hurting, because the flagship Station WLIB in New York saw its ratings drop from 1.4 to 1.2.

To many, including myself, I found this to be slightly disturbing. I started to wonder if one of our most powerful tools in fighting Bush & Co. was all just a dream. So I decided to look into and see if there is anying to worry about. What I found is not only are we doing great, but we may be on the verge of a breakout that will make the Brownshirts, Bushbots, Righties, or what ever you want to called them go into shock.

The issue is, like always, the Righties are not looking at the entire picture and are only focusing on one piece of the puzzle. While they are doing that our poltical air horn is spreading across the country and even <gasp> to some Red States!

Breaking the Social Contract - the Link Between Public Education and Social Security

Fri Feb 11, 2005 at 04:13:25 PM PDT

I do not understand why groups link AARP or MoveOn.org do not make the argument that Social Security is part of the American Social Contract that each American is a part of and actual benefit from. The vast majority of Americans are products of the Public Education system at both the Primary and Collegiate level. This very PUBLIC system is <<shock>> TAX-SUPPORTED, this means that many Americans at the age of 18 OWES others for something that they were given. Therefore, why is it too much to ask that they PAY it back.

This is not socialism, like many Bushbots and Righties would want you want to believe. If anything this is a <<again shock>> CHRISTIAN ideal.

Proverbs 22:7 "The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender."

Quite simply, the youth owes the older generation for paying for their education, thus the youth needs to protect the older generation as they age. If you do that, the next generation will do the same for you.

Reagan Staffer talks about Gannon

Thu Feb 10, 2005 at 10:58:11 AM PDT

From Poynter Online

From BRUCE BARTLETT: Having worked in the White House, I can assure everyone that not only would it be impossible to get a White House pass using an alias, it is impossible even to get past the gate for an appointment using an alias. Thorough FBI background checks are required for the former and a picture ID is necessary for the latter. Therefore, if Gannon was using an alias, White House staff had to be involved in maintaining his cover.

Bruce Bartlett is a former Reagan staffer. So either Scotty Boy (and possibly the Secret Service) was in on this or we have a security breach you could drive a MACK truck through.

What is the goal of a blogger?

Thu Feb 10, 2005 at 09:06:31 AM PDT

What is the goal of a blogger? Is it to be part of a greater collective, or is it just personal? Some bloggers indeed enjoy working and talking to others in the blogsphere for a common goal. One does not have to look past the recent Gannongate work done by many bloggers here at DailyKos and on other blogs. However, there are some that may be working to put out a personal political goal. Kos may indeed be one of those people. Wasn't the whole idea of DailyKos to push for certain political commentary and work.

So what is it fellow bloggers, what are your thoughts of what it is to be a blogger?
